Little Stinker!
Ugh! I hate SKUNKS! I've never really given the little creatures much thought until we moved into this neighborhood 5 years ago. We call our neighborhood, "Skunk town." About every other day, you smell that oh-so-unpleasant odor. In the summer, it's absolute misery. Close the windows, fresh air can only be found in a Febreeze bottle.
So, for years, we just smelled them....or saw them dead on the side of the road.....but not now! No...now, they come up to our back door about every other night to eat our cat's food. Apparently, Friskies is for skunks, too, just in case you were wondering....
Like racoons, they have attitudes. I guess they've realized that we are terrified of them, and they have all the power. My lazy good for nothin' cats hide or head for higher ground....they sit up on the fence without moving a muscle.
The little stinkers kind of back up next to our back sliding door as if to say, "You want some of this!??"
Ok, so, clearly, I don't want to "scare" it because, obviously, when you "scare" a skunk, they go all hand-stand on ya. That's the point of regret.....there's no going back. So, I try sort of tapping on the glass...."Hey...um....go...away, ok?...... Would that be ok? If you kind of go away?"
Thing turns and looks at me, smirking.....turns back to eat.
He's holding all the cards at this point.
Needless to say....the kids are NOT camping out in the backyard this summer!
UGH! I hate skunks!

The photos made it look at first like you had a skunk *inside* your house. Glad to know it wasn't that bad. My sister the vet said there is a "ferret be gone" you can spray outside your house to keep that vermin off. Would be nice if the vets have a "skunk be gone" to use, although I can't imagine what it might smell like...

We have had skunks for years (or they have had us). For the first decade or so, it was not unusual to see one or two curled up together on the mat outside our sliding door . . . and we do not put cat food out. When our cats were outdoor cats, I almost opened the door for the wrong critter to come in at night, several times.
When the kids were little, Josh was claiming seniority over Michael in a 'animated discussion' about Legos. Their volume increased and there was a lot of stomping and door slamming . . . and then a very intense, distinctive odor wafted up through the floor boards. We learned that a mother skunk and her brood had a haven under our house. The human commotion above them startled her (them?) and the skunk scolding won. After that, the kids still squabbled, but much more quietly and without ANY stomping and slamming.

Holly, oh dear! I live in Illinois, and in my former residence of Elmhurst, we were constantly being greeted by Skunk (yes, with a capital S). I know families who had them in the backyard and got them to leave with lots of loud music. Make sure there are no havens for them, like an area under a porch, etc. But if there are, install speakers. :)

Wow...Thanks, Sarah! Great advice... we'll hit them with a little Maroon 5 or something!
I like that!
